Catalyst x RSB @ Kuhlhaus

by Samaquias Lorta -

Catalyst x RSB @ Kuhlhaus

When: Thursday 20 June, 19:30
Where: Kühlhaus Berlin, Luckenwalder Str. 3, 10963 Berlin

As part of our partnership with the RSB Orchestra, we present a night that blends contemporary electronic musicians and classical compositions as a way to contrast different visions of what the future of sound would look like. The event will feature original compositions from our own community as well as five classical musicians performing pieces by famous 20th Century composers.

For the event in the Kuhlhaus atrium, Electronic Music Production & Performance Certificate Lead Benjamin Bacon has written ‘Gesture Contours I-III’ – a graphic modular score for acoustic and electronic instruments. The piece stems from projects from our HyperSynth collaboration with the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin and uses graphic forms commonly seen when describing synthetic sound. It will be performed by Creative Production (Music) MA student Jonas Kern. The night will also feature Creative Production (Music) MA student Grgur Savic’s digital-animated graphic composition ‘ETERNAL FORCES OF SAVIGNY'S PRIME’

💥Students of Catalyst can purchase reduced price tickets for just €10! The discount tickets can be purchased here by using the code CAT10 when paying. Note that there is a limited number of reduced price tickets.

///Jonas Kern

Is a multimedia artist and electroacoustic musician based in Berlin. His multimedial works explore the mergence of rich narrative soundscapes and audio-reactive visuals as could be seen in different installational formats - like his experimental saxophone live performance/ installation A Film Without A Film (2021), or his more recent Into Your Dream Temple (2023) in collaboration with Temple Rat. His electroacoustic compositions have mostly found a voice in the independent film scene of Berlin, appearing in projects such as Lost in Time (2019) and Feuerkreis (2022). Kern specialises in immersive creative processes, exploring practices such as acting in films he scores and involving music from early stages of the production of films.

Under the moniker Forest Choir, Kern creates lyrical, transcendental auditive spaces for self-exploration and narrative meditation, using live vocals, field recordings and synthesiser

/// Grgur Savic

Is a Croatian-German experimental composer, saxophonist, and curator. His artistic research is focused on the development of contemporary and experimental repertoire based on the basics of extended instrumental techniques, and graphic compositions with a focus on new music technologies and experimental electronics. He leads his main projects – PITCH SHIFTING, Ensemble The F O R: M, G.S – VORTEX, and SPACE TIGERS BERLIN. Curates "das Ende" experimental and AV music series.

This composition combines analog handcrafted techniques with digitized computer methods. The animated graphic score encourages a creative approach and musical decision-making that connects the auditory experience with the visual aspect, aiming to achieve both harmony and tension between pitches, articulations, dynamics, and durations to enhance visual resonance. While it is desirable to capture the intended idea as closely as possible by combining exact notations with impromptu elements, the goal is not to impose strict restrictions or fixed limits. Instead, the aim is to provide a ‘framed notational system’ that offers guidance and opportunities for further sound exploration.
