Rafael Toral
Melodic without notes, rhythmic with no beat, familiar but strange, meticulous but radically free. Our On the Couch session with innovative composer and performer Rafael Toral promises to dismantle electronic music conventions and inspire a radical new approach to live performance and music making as a whole.

When: Monday 29th October, 18:15
Where: Lightroom, dBs Music Berlin @ Funkhaus Berlin
RSVP: www.facebook.com/events/1904140159895884

Shifting the emphasis from technology and instruments to the musician, Rafael's emotive and visceral projects explore silence and space through decision making and physical gesture. In one of his memorable performances, otherworldly sounds are conjured from thin air by the fluid movements of his arms, hands and fingertips. The instrument: a pair of simple-yet-sci-fi musical gloves.

Hosted by Electronic Music Production & Performance lead Eliad Wagner, the session will discuss in detail Rafael's very unique and physical approach to sound design and performance, including instrument design and electronic music philosophy. Rafael, who also has many years' experience working in public broadcasting as an engineer, recordist and TV sound designer, is an excellent speaker and lecturer.

Performing solo or in numerous collaborations (including Jim O’Rourke, Jim Baker, Sei Miguel, Chris Corsano, John Edwards, Evan Parker, Tatsuya Nakatani, Manuel Mota, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Christian Marclay, Sonic Youth, Rhys Chatham, Lee Ranaldo, C Spencer Yeh, and many others), Rafael has been touring throughout Europe, Canada, USA, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

Don't miss this exciting and eye-opening evening.
